(for smaller holes, or when power tools aren't feasible)
Loosen the Soil: Start by using a shovel to loosen the soil around the perimeter of your marked area. Dig a shallow trench all the way around.
Dig in Layers: Don’t try to dig too deep at once. Take small scoops of soil with your shovel.
Remove the Soil: Have a wheelbarrow, buckets, or other container to hold the excavated soil. Remove the soil frequently to prevent the hole from filling up.
Break Up Clods: If you encounter large clods of soil, use a garden fork or digging bar to break them up.
Sloping the Walls (Important for Stability): For holes deeper than about 2-3 feet, angle the sides of the hole slightly inward (like a trapezoid instead of a cylinder). This makes the sides more stable and less likely to collapse.
Dealing with Roots/Rocks: A pickaxe or digging bar can help dislodge stubborn roots and rocks.
