6. Safety

SAFETY WARNINGS - READ CAREFULLY! CALL BEFORE YOU DIG (811 in the US): This is critical to avoid damaging underground utilities. Allow ample time (at least a few days) for them to mark the utilities.

Wear Safety Gear:

Gloves: Protect your hands.

Eye Protection (Safety Glasses or Goggles): Prevent debris from flying into your eyes.

Hearing Protection: If using power tools, wear earplugs or earmuffs.

Sturdy Boots: Protect your feet.

Dust Mask/Respirator: Especially important when digging in dry soil or when encountering mold or asbestos.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Watch out for overhead power lines and other hazards.

Work in a Well-Ventilated Area: Especially important when using power tools.

Take Breaks: Digging can be physically demanding.

Never Dig Alone: Have someone nearby in case of an emergency.

Check for Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards like snakes, insects, or poisonous plants.

Follow Power Tool Safety Instructions: Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Disconnect power tools when not in use.

Be aware of cave-in dangers. Excavations deeper than a few feet can be unstable, and collapse is possible. Shoring and other safety measures may be required for deeper excavations - consult a professional.
